Madison Roller Hockey
Where?
The Madison Roller Hockey League is located in the rural county of Madison, Va. The county population is small but well developed in youth sport opportunities for its community. The Madison Roller Hockey League is well established and with the help of so many volunteers in the Madison County area, this league has become what it is today: just plain old fun for everyone involved. The rink is located off Main St. in Madison, past the water tower, behind the American Legion Hall.
Who?
Chris Artale is responsible for making the league what it is today. He had an idea to form a league in which kids could have fun learning and competing in this exciting sport. When the league started it was an immediate success due to the interest of so many youth who had desired to see a league formed in Madison. Also, volunteer coaches and referees have made each Sunday's matchups a success.
What?
The Madison Roller Hockey League consists of two divisions: the junior league, which is comprised of 4 teams, and the senior league, which is also comprised of 4 teams. Each team consists of approximately 8-10 players. There are 4 total games on each Sunday (Dec.-Feb.). The games are made up of 2 periods, each 20 minutes in length, with a five minute half-time. The games are run by scoreboard and 2 referees monitor the game. The rinks are tennis courts, converted in the Winter with boards, and lights for night events if needed.
When?
The games are played on Sundays at 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30. All games are subject to rain/snow and each game is rescheduled when weather is a problem. The season starts in November with practices and the playoffs end late February. Teams practice throughout the business week and weekends.
Extras
The league is a "non-contact" league, meaning that no intentional "rough-housing" is allowed. Penalties are given when referees see fit. The league uses USA Roller Hockey rules. The league has a full concession stand run by volunteers.
